St. Patrick’s Day’s Wednesday Morning News

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Good Wednesday morning readers!  Today people the world over come together to celebrate Irish culture by wearing green and drinking beer in honor of St. Patrick’s Day.  Originally celebrated in 1600 as a Catholic recognition of St. Patrick’s delivery of salvation to the Irish people, now the holiday is more of a general jubilation for all things Irish.  Without question, green is the prevalent color in America on this day.  From the water in the Chicago river to NHL and NBA uniforms to the beer at almost every establishment in the land, we are all green today.  So to those of you how are bred Irish- like myself- or just Irish for the day, Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Now for your Wednesday news fix-

1) Speaking before Congress on Tuesday, Attorney General Eric Holder told those present that American representatives would “read Miranda rights to Osama bin Laden’s corpse.”  Whether this is a threat or statement of practicality, Holder is probably correct.  Many conservatives lament the Obama Administration policy of trying terror suspects and Holder’s statement may be read as an act of appeasement.  Conversely, the odds of capturing the al Qeada leader alive are slim as he would likely die in a raging fire fight- hence the corpse comment.  Regardless, the ramifications of holding bin Laden alive probably justify reading his rights posthumously.  I do not favor the death penalty, however terror groups have reacted en masse to prompt the release of lower ranked individuals.  Imprisoning bin Laden would likely prompt terror attempts on the level of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing- also derived from holding a high level Muslim cleric.  As I said, I do not favor the death penalty, but I agree with Holder that the potential harm of holding bin Laden like any other terrorist outweigh the benefit.

Words we can all agree on

2) For the eighth consecutive game, the Chicago Bulls lost- this time 104-97 to the Memphis Grizzlies.  Playing without starters Derrick Rose, Kirk Hinrich, Luol Deng, and Joakim Noah, Chicago fell behind by 25 before clawing within three in the final minutes.  Although the loss was offset by the Bobcats defeat on the road, this is a nosedive Vinny Del Negro needs to correct quickly.  There are sixteen games remaining and by most estimations the Bulls need to win ten to reach the postseason.  With four tough games on the horizon, that means Chicago has to go 10-2 over their final twelve games to earn the “right” of losing a first round series to LeBron James.  I won’t hold my breath on that.

We need you DRose

3) Yesterday in Mesa, the Chicago Cubs got one step closer to naming a fifth starter with a 4-1 win over the Texas Rangers.  In an otherwise unimportant game, Carlos Silva turned in his second consecutive solid outing- throwing four innings of two hit baseball.  With the first four rotation spots nailed down (three if you don’t count Ted Lilly for the opening month), a veteran presence at the back of the rotation could go a long way toward boosting an otherwise unspectacular Chicago pitching staff.  Candidly, I hope Silva makes the rotation and enjoys a great season.  He has to be better than the moron we shipped to Seattle in exchange for him.

Silva is the one who is not a douche

4) After months of waiting, Tiger Woods announced he will return to competitive golf in April’s Masters at Augusta National.  This comes as no surprise to many.  Tiger has always had a flare for the dramatic and no plot is more compelling than potentially overcoming an incredible private misstep by winning the world’s most prestigious tournament.  I know many people hope Tiger will fall on his face, but his private transgressions do not effect my perception of his golf game.  I want Woods to not only win the Masters, but by a substantial margin.

Have a good Wednesday everyone!
